Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 7, 2020 11:13 AM
From: Senator John P. Blake
To: All Senate members
Subject: Career Readiness Council

In the near future, I will be re-introducing Senate Bill 861 of the 2019-20 session to properly position Pennsylvania to take on a statewide approach to career readiness for all students in the form of a “Career Readiness Council.”

Educators, businesses, and community partners are working at the regional level to ensure that students explore their skills and interests to access the careers of tomorrow.

Now is the time to elevate that conversation to the state level. With a state-level council dedicated to career readiness, we can improve transition from K-12 to postsecondary to the workforce, as well as ensure that programs are aligned with current or anticipated business and industry needs.

Funded through private dollars, the Council will have a dedicated staff, website, and communication strategy to build on the foundation of our existing regional activity. The Council would serve as a powerful voice and policy lever for the role that career readiness must play in our education system to meet Pennsylvania’s workforce pipeline needs.

In particular, the Career Readiness Council would be comprised of the Governor and other cabinet officials; legislative members; and appointed representatives from the business, labor, life-sciences, manufacturing, energy, workforce, and education communities.

Please join me in this time-critical effort to ensure Pennsylvania’s competitiveness in the global economy and to better prepare our children for the 21st century workforce.

Prior co-sponsors included Senators Fontana, Kim Ward, Brewster, Costa, Vogel, Haywood, Boscola, Aument, Browne and Tartaglione.
