Subject: | Encouraging Smoking/Vaping Cessation During COVID 19 |
I will soon introduce a resolution to recognize that it is vital, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, to make the public aware of the serious potential risks associated with smoking and vaping and to encourage smokers to discuss with their healthcare professionals the numerous smoking cessation methods and medications, and expert coaching and support programs available to them. According to the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, smoking is associated with more than a doubling of odds of disease progression in people who had already developed COVID-19. Further, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reports COVID-19 is an especially serious threat to those who smoke tobacco or who vape because the disease attacks the lungs. And the CDC, FDA, Surgeon General and state health departments advocate that stopping smoking, vaping and avoiding secondhand exposure should be added to the list of important preventative measures for COVID-19. I hope you will join me in support. For immediate coaching and support call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. |
