MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 21, 2020 12:15 PM
From: Senator Lisa M. Boscola
To: All Senate members
Subject: Community High School Graduate Preference for Civil Service Examinations

I plan to introduce legislation which would provide preference points on a civil service examination for an individual applying to become a police officer or firefighter in a municipality served by a school district in which he or she has graduated from.  Modeling off of the veterans preference law for civil service examinations, this initiative would provide an individual with preference points on the basis of if they successfully graduated from a school in a municipality in which they are now seeking to become a police officer or firefighter.  These points would be added to a civil service examination and taken into account if the individual meets the criteria and only would apply if they were seeking employment within that municipality’s police department or fire department.

The objective of this legislation is to incentivize individuals growing up within a community, who want to serve as a police officer or firefighter and provide them with an advantage when applying to protect their hometown.

Introduced as SB1264
