Subject: | Rent and Mortgage Freeze Due to COVID-19 |
In the near future, I will be introducing companion legislation to that of Representatives Fiedler, Innamorato, Lee and Otten that would implement a rent and mortgage freeze to help address housing insecurity and financial burdens Pennsylvanians are facing because of COVID-19. We are facing an unprecedented unemployment crisis. Pennsylvania workers are experiencing unexpected layoffs and furloughs due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Families are facing the terrifying prospect of not being able to pay their rent or mortgage for the foreseeable future. Families, neighborhoods, and communities are at stake. Housing is a human right; we must do everything we can to protect each other during this time. This legislation would attempt to ease the burden on and increase protections for all Pennsylvanians by implementing a rent and mortgage freeze. By freezing rent and mortgage payments, the current financial stress hundreds of thousands of our fellow Pennsylvanians are feeling, and will continue to feel, would be alleviated. This would give many Pennsylvanians the ability to make life-sustaining and life-saving purchases including food and medicine. The safety and security of our constituents, of our communities, must be a top priority. Together, we can ensure that we make it through these trying times. Please join me in supporting this important piece of legislation that will help keep Pennsylvanians in their homes. |
