Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 3, 2020 09:22 AM
From: Senator Lindsey M. Williams and Sen. Thomas H. Killion
To: All Senate members
Subject: Senate Resolution Designating March 2020 as “Problem Gambling Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania

This month, we will be introducing a unanimous consent resolution, similar to SR 40, designating March 2020 as “Problem Gamblers Awareness Month” in recognition of the annual “National Problem Gambling Awareness Month” campaign supported by the National Council of Problem Gambling (NCPG).

Legalized gambling was enacted in Pennsylvania to provide a source of new revenue to the Commonwealth and to provide broad economic opportunities for Pennsylvanians. And while the Gaming Act has shown to be beneficial to our economy, it is important to remember the impact that problem gambling can have on residents of the Commonwealth.

NCPG reports that 4 to 6 million Americans are considered problem gamblers and that problem gambling affects individuals of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds in all communities.

Our resolution urges the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to continue its work with agency partners to promote public awareness and treatment of problem gambling.
