Subject: | 17th Airborne Division Day - March 24 |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating March 24, 2020, as "17th Airborne Division Day" in Pennsylvania. The 17th Airborne Division of the First Allied Airborne Army was formed, trained, and entered combat during World War II. More members of this specialized airborne infantry unit came from Pennsylvania than from any other state. The Division engaged in the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe campaigns, having command posts in England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Major General William M. Miley led the division from its activation in 1943 to its inactivation in 1945. During Operation Varsity, General Miley was the first man - out of 16,000 paratroopers - to jump out of the first plane on March 24, 1945 -- 75 years ago. Please join me in sponsoring this resolution in honor of all those who fought valiantly for the 17th Airborne Division. |
