Subject: Resolution Recognizing Community Risk Reduction Week in the Commonwealth

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to designate the week of January 20th through January 26th as Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Week in Pennsylvania.

Studies show most fire-related calls and many medical calls for service are preventable. In 2017, an estimated 52% of residential building fires were cooking-related, 14% were electrical malfunctions, and 9% were heating related. With property damage from fires increasing from $23 billion in 2017 to nearly $26 billion in 2018, it is again time to, along with the Office of the State Fire Commissioner, promote risk reduction in our communities.

CCR Week was started as a grassroots initiative by fire service professionals across the country to raise awareness of the importance of risk reduction in the fire service community. The idea was to help promote CRR with communities taking part in a variety of CRR programs and activities, making our communities safer and reducing the occurrence and impact of emergency events for both community members and emergency responders. CRR Week events focus on the five E’s: Education, Engineering, Enforcement, Emergency Response, and Economic Incentive.

By identifying and prioritizing risks, and concentrating the investment of resources to reduce the occurrence and impact of risks, individuals and communities across the Commonwealth can “get ahead of the call,” ensuring first responders are able to help those most in-need.

I hope you will join me in support of this resolution.
