MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 13, 2020 09:25 AM
From: Senator Pam Iovino
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Commemorating the Decommissioning of the "USS Pittsburgh"

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to commemorate the decommissioning of USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) that has protected America’s freedom for 35 years.

USS Pittsburgh was commissioned on November 23, 1985, as a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarine. Submarines of this class dive to depths of 650 feet, travel at speeds of over 25 knots, and carry 25 torpedo tube-launched weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon missiles. USS Pittsburgh has a crew of 150 and has completed over 1,000 dives, a rare milestone in the U.S. Navy.

USS Pittsburgh is the fourth vessel to be named after the city of Pittsburgh in U.S. Navy history, including an ironclad gunboat commissioned in 1861 which served during the American Civil War, an armored cruiser commissioned in 1905 which served during World War I, and a Baltimore-class cruiser commissioned in 1944 which served during World War II.

During more than 35 years of service, USS Pittsburgh saw 15 deployments to the European theater, the Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean. The Pittsburgh also was deployed for both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Its presence in ports all over the world was critical to strengthening partnerships with U.S. allies and advancing international security.

Under current commanding officer Commander Jason Diechler, a native of Pittsburgh, USS Pittsburgh completed its final deployment, traveling under the ice in an unprecedented Arctic deployment for the sub.

USS Pittsburgh will be decommissioned in Bremerton, Washington on January 17, 2020.

I hope you join me in support of this resolution.
