Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 27, 2019 01:55 PM
From: Senator Thomas H. Killion
To: All Senate members
Subject: “Bullying Prevention Month” in Pennsylvania (October 2019)

Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution designating the month of October as “Bullying Prevention Month” in Pennsylvania.

National Bullying Prevention Month is October at the national level as well; and is recognized in communities across the United States, with hundreds of schools and organizations signing on as partners.

Bullying is defined as intentional, repeated behavior by one or more persons, which either physically or emotionally harms others. Bullying takes many forms and affects all classes, ages, religions, and communities without discrimination.

According to data at the state and national level, in 2017, 41.6 percent of middle school students and 19 percent of high school students reported being bullied on school property.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Office for Safe Schools maintains a webpage containing resources on bullying prevention for parents, educators and professionals who serve our youth in and out-of-school.

The Department’s Bullying Prevention Consultation Line 1-866-716-0424 is a toll free number that allows individuals experiencing bullying to discuss effective strategies and learn more about the resources that are available to deal with school-based bullying.

I hope you will join me in helping to raise awareness for bullying prevention in Pennsylvania.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
