|Subject:||International Year of the Periodic Table|
|I observance of the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table of the Elements, I will be introducing a resolution proclaiming 2019 as the “International Year of the Periodic Table.”
The periodic table is one of the most significant achievements in the history of the natural sciences. The periodic table is a uniting scientific concept with broad applications and implications in chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy and other natural sciences.
2019 is the 150th anniversary of Dmitry Mendeleev’s first publication of the Periodic Table in 1869. It was Mendeleev’s recognition of organizing principles based on the periodic occurrence of the chemical and physical properties of the elements that resulted in the periodic table. The table is a unique tool which has enabled scientists to predict the appearance of properties of matter on the Earth and everywhere in the Universe. The periodic table is an important and defining concept in the study of chemistry and science and in their application to our society’s needs.
This international observance will increase understanding of the role of chemistry and other sciences in meeting the world’s needs, will encourage interest in chemistry and science among young people, and will examine the future roles and challenges of chemistry and science.
I hope you will consider joining me in support of this resolution.
