Subject: | Suicide Prevention Awareness Month - September |
In the near future, we will introduce a resolution recognizing September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. On average there are 129 suicides per day. Most recent numbers from 2017 reveal that 47,173 Americans died by suicide and there were an estimated 1,400,000 suicide attempts. Meanwhile, each day 21 veterans commit suicide. Suicide is a major, preventable cause of premature death which is influenced by psychosocial, cultural, and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through responses that address these main risk factors. There is strong evidence that adequate prevention can reduce suicide rates. Through this resolution, we can help raise awareness that suicide is preventable, improve education about suicide, spread information about suicide awareness, and decrease stigmatization regarding suicide. Please join us in cosponsoring this important resolution. |
