Subject: | “Bike Month” in PA (May 2019) and Bike to Work Day and Week Resolution |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of May 2019 as "Bike Month," the week of May 13-19, 2019 as "Bike to Work Week," and Friday, May 17, 2019 as "Bike to Work Day" in Pennsylvania. The League of American Bicyclists has declared May 2019 as National Bike Month, a celebration of bicycling, recognized since 1956. Enjoyed by Pennsylvanians of all ages, bicycling for transportation, recreation, fitness, and sport are part of a healthy lifestyle. Bicycle commuting has grown significantly in the Commonwealth, and nationwide, over the past two decades, and benefits both employees and employers. Employees who utilize this environmentally friendly practice integrate physical activity into their daily routine and report experiencing lower stress levels. In addition to the mental and physical health benefits, bicycle commuters reduce their transportation related costs while reducing traffic congestion and air pollution in their communities. During the week of May 13 through 19, 2019 and on May 17, 2019, employers across the state will encourage employees to bike to work as part of the League of American Bicyclists recognized events. I have joined together to work collaboratively with the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia to introduce this resolution and ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring. |
