Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 27, 2019 02:20 PM
From: Senator Mike Regan and Sen. Lindsey M. Williams
To: All Senate members
Subject: PA Family GI Bill

In coordination with our House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee Co-Chairs, we will be introducing legislation to establish an education program for families of Pennsylvania National Guard members.

The Military Family Education Program - or "PA Family GI Bill" - will enable Guard members to earn educational benefits for their spouse and/or children by committing to a second six-year enlistment. This will help retain current National Guard members and attract transitioning military service members to Pennsylvania, which in turn, will strengthen our readiness and assist in maintaining our rank as the second largest National Guard in the nation.

This program will cover ten semesters or five years equivalent at the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education tuition rate. This mirrors the Pennsylvania National Guard Education Assistance Program, which has been an educational benefit for National Guard members since 1996.

Pennsylvania families often make sacrifices to support their National Guard soldiers and airmen, who rely on such support to ensure they remain focused on their mission. Regardless of whether they are training, assisting with natural disaster relief, or even deployed on behalf of our nation, every time a member of the National Guard reports for duty, their family sacrifices. This program will provide a well-deserved benefit to these families to thank them for all that they do to ensure Pennsylvania has a highly effective National Guard.

We sincerely believe that our Pennsylvania National Guard members and their families deserve this benefit and request your support as a co-sponsor.
