Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 9, 2019 01:04 PM
From: Senator Michele Brooks
To: All Senate members
Subject: National Guard Service Tax Credit

In the near future, I will be reintroducing Senate Bill 1280, previously introduced by Senator Randy Vulakovich, which establishes a tax credit for taxes owed to the state Department of Revenue by Pennsylvania National Guard members.

The tax credit would apply to both Army and Air National Guardsmen and women who are residents of the Commonwealth, have at least two years of service as a member of one of the two services, and are active members of either the Air or Army National Guard when they sign their tax return.

Once the service member has completed two years of service with either the Pennsylvania Air or Army National Guard, and is otherwise qualified as described above, the service member may claim a $500 tax credit, and once the service member completes six years of service, may claim a $1,000 tax credit. In the event that the full credit cannot be used for that year, the excess may be carried over and applied to the service member’s state tax liability in the following year.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation. Our Air and Army National Guard members deserve as much support as we can give. Please do not hesitate to contact my office with any questions.

Introduced as SB1167
