Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 4, 2018 04:36 PM
From: Senator Judy Ward
To: All Senate members
Subject: Allowing buses transporting school-aged children for non-school purposes to use the same safety features as when transporting for school purposes

I am reintroducing Senate Bill 302 of last session, legislation which will allow buses to use the safety features on school buses when transporting school-aged children for non-school purposes.

The impetus of the bill involved a young girl in my district being stuck by a passing motorist while getting off a bus that was transporting children to a church service. The impatience of this driver caused the girl to be hit and thrown about 20 feet into a snow bank, which luckily helped her avoid a more tragic outcome.

Although the bus was equipped with the same stop arm and flashing lights on a school bus, under Pennsylvania Law, these safety features that could have been used to prevent this unfortunate accident were not legally allowed to be operated. My bill would change this inconsistency, and protect children getting on and off buses the same way they are protected when going to and from school.

Please join me in sponsoring this important piece of legislation for the safety of school-aged children.
