MEMORANDUM

To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Urging the STEAM Be Put Back Into STEM Education

STEM to STEAM is a movement that involves promoting the educational philosophy that creative and critical thinking skills are greatly enhanced and further developed through exposure to the arts.

The STEAM art education of a student strengthens problem-solving skills and other cognitive abilities, adding to the overall academic achievement and interpersonal skills necessary for both academic and professional success.

It is projected there will be 1,400,000 new tech jobs by 2020. It is imperative students are able to demonstrate an aptitude for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in order to obtain these jobs.

The STEAM movement is not about spending less time on science, technology, education and mathematics to make room for the arts. Rather, it focuses on integrating the arts and music into the curriculum to ignite students’ imagination and innovation.

We ask that you please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution and in urging the Department of Education integrate art into the current STEM model.
