Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 19, 2018 11:36 AM
From: Senator John C. Rafferty, Jr. and Sen. John P. Sabatina, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: School Bus Safety Week (October 22nd-26th)

In the near future, we intend to introduce a resolution designating the week of October 22-26, 2018, in Pennsylvania as “School Bus Safety Week”, which is recognized across the United States to raise awareness and importance of school bus safety.

Nationally, school bus ridership has grown to over 26 million and continues to provide a safe, critical transportation service for children and teenagers in school. The school bus remains the safest way to travel to and from school. Students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely if they take the school bus instead of traveling by car.

In Pennsylvania, school bus safety is a top priority for the 1.5 million children who are transported on our roads each day. Students, parents, school officials, school bus drivers, and the motoring public all play an integral role in keeping our children safe while on or around the school bus.

Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law requires motorists to obey the following: 1) Stopping when you meet or overtake a stopped school bus with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended, 2) Stopping when you approach an intersection where a school bus is stopped with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended, 3) Stopping at least 10 feet away from the school bus, 4) Waiting until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm has been withdrawn before moving, and 5) Waiting until all the children have reached a place of safety. Failure to obey this law subjects offenders to a 60-day license suspension, 5 points on your driving record, and a $250 fine.

Please join us in raising the importance of school bus safety to ensure our children return home safely each day.

If you have any questions, please contact Nolan Ritchie, Senator Rafferty’s Office, at nritchie@pasen.gov, or Jason Gerard, Senator Sabatina’s Office, at jgerard@pasenate.com.
