| Subject: | Teen Driver Safety Week (October 21st-27th) |
| In the near future, we intend to introduce a resolution designating the week of October 21-27, 2018, in Pennsylvania as “Teen Driver Safety Week”, which is recognized across the United States to raise awareness and importance of teen driver safety. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens (ages 15-18) in the United States – ahead of all other types of injury, disease, or violence. In 2017, there were 40 fatalities in crashes involving teens (ages 16-17), and 36,158 young drivers (ages 16-20) were involved in reportable crashes on the Commonwealth’s roadways, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The most significant piece of legislation to enhance teen driver safety was the enactment of Pennsylvania’s Graduated Driver Licensing Law in 2011, which is proven to cut crashes by 20-40 percent. This three-stage licensing system includes a learner or supervised practice driving stage, a junior license stage that allows for unsupervised driving but includes restrictions addressing risk, and a full licensure stage where all provisions are lifted.
