Subject: | Resolution Designating October 2018 as "1918 Pandemic Remembrance Month" in Pennsylvania |
In the very near future, I plan on introducing a resolution designating October 2018 as "1918 Pandemic Remembrance Month” in Pennsylvania. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1918 influenza pandemic. The 1918 influenza pandemic is recognized as one of the most devastating diseases in human history with an estimated 50 million deaths worldwide. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with the 1918 influenza virus and the high mortality in healthy people was a unique feature of this pandemic. More than 675,000 Americans are estimated to have died during the pandemic; 50,000 of which were here in Pennsylvania. As you may know, influenza pandemics occurred three times in the previous century, and history and science suggest that the United States and the world will face at least one pandemic in this century. A pandemic can cause severe illness, death, and disruption throughout the country and the world, and outbreaks can occur in many different locations all at the same time. We must remember history, learn from history and be vigilant of history repeating itself in future years. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and in recognizing October 2018 as "1918 Pandemic Remembrance Month" in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If you have any questions regarding this resolution, please contact Christine Zubeck in my office at 717-787-6123 or czubeck@pasen.gov. Thank you for your consideration. |
