Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 11, 2018 06:04 PM
From: Senator Vincent J. Hughes
To: All Senate members
Subject: Preserving Workers' Rights

In light of the pending US Supreme Court decision in Janus v. AFSCME -- which may deeply impact Pennsylvanian workers’ ability to collectively bargain – I am introducing a resolution that recognizes the important role unions have played in our state’s economy and urges further action by the General Assembly to support working families.

As many of you know, the U.S. Supreme Court in Janus is deliberating whether to overturn nearly forty years of precedent which has strengthened the collective bargaining of workers by ensuring that every individual has paid their fair share. By dividing employees, an adverse decision in Janus may undercut and limit the ability of members and their chosen representatives to bargain for workplace safety, access to medical care, and a retirement with dignity, amongst other things.

Accordingly, at a time of growing inequality, our resolution urges the General Assembly to advocate for and to expand labor and workplace rights in the Commonwealth, to hold employers who spend taxpayer dollars on anti-union campaigns accountable, to relieve the tax burden on the middle class, properly fund our schools and human services, to support local decision making in labor negotiations, and to fight for higher wages and safer working conditions for all workers.

If you agree, I urge you to sign on to this resolution as a co-sponsor in solidarity to our labor brothers and sisters.
