Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 13, 2018 10:02 AM
From: Senator John C. Rafferty, Jr. and Sen. John P. Sabatina, Jr., Sen. Mike Regan
To: All Senate members
Subject: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month (May 2018)

In the near future, we intend to introduce a resolution designating the month of May 2018 in Pennsylvania as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month”, which is recognized across the United States to raise awareness of motorcycle safety on our shared roadway system.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 5,286 motorcyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2016, a five-percent increase from 2015. Those deaths accounted for 14 percent of the total highway fatalities from that year. This increase in motorcycle fatalities continues a tragic trend over the last three years, where fatalities have increased since 2014.

In Pennsylvania, data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) suggests there were 192 motorcycle fatalities in 2016, a seven-percent increase from 2015. Further, the total number of motorcycle crashes increased from 3,413 in 2015 to 3,454 in 2016.

Examples of safety tips for motorcyclists include attending a free training via PennDOT’s Motorcycle Safety Program, wearing reflective clothing, always riding sober, and obeying all speed limits. Similarly, safety tips for motorists sharing the road with motorcyclists comprise of not driving distracted, checking mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes and at intersections, allowing more following distance, and respecting a motorcycle as a full-size vehicle.

Please join us in supporting this resolution to encourage motorists and motorcyclists alike to “share the road” to reduce motorcyclist deaths and injuries.
