Subject: | Armed School Security Officers |
The recent tragic events involving school shootings have brought awareness to the necessity of advancing and improving school safety and security. In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that aims to enhance the protection of our most vulnerable citizens, our children, while they are in school. This legislation includes implementing a security presence in all publicly funded schools. This presence will consist of at least one armed, trained school security officer. Officers will undergo a background investigation, be required to maintain certification under HR218 (Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004) and be annually certified in position-specific training. Their primary responsibility will be to detect threats before allowing entrance into the school office or directly into the school. Additionally, these officers will maintain direct lines of communications with school officials, local police or state police, and be able to provide an armed presence and real-time information in the event of an incident. Current and former law enforcement officers already possess extensive experience in security, protecting public safety and community relations. Utilizing their training and skills in this manner will greatly enhance the security level in our schools. Thank you for your interest in this important piece of legislation.
