Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 4, 2018 10:57 AM
From: Senator James R. Brewster
To: All Senate members
Subject: Armed Guards for School Buildings

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation requiring all public and charter school buildings that host classroom instruction to have an armed security guard.

The provision of armed guards in schools will augment other school security features outlined by a new School Safety Commission. The commission will be created through legislation that I have authored that is part of the school safety package. The commission will be tasked with examining proposed school security measures. These include metal detectors, automatic emergency doorstops, police call buttons, and any other form of security.

The armed guards can provide schools a layer of protection from outside intruders and enhance protection for students in school buildings.

School districts will be reimbursed by the state for the expense of providing the armed guards at school buildings.

Introduced as SB1108
