Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 28, 2018 10:04 AM
From: Senator Judith L. Schwank
To: All Senate members
Subject: Brain Injury Awareness Month

When we return to session, I will be offering a resolution recognizing March as Brain Injury Month.
Every year some 2.5 million Americans suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBI) from blows to the head, striking objects with their head and violent shaking. More than 3.5 million Americans are diagnosed with acquired brain injuries (ABI) from events such as strokes, aneurysms, postsurgical complications and disease. More than 17 million Americans live with these injuries, which frequently result in changes in the way a person thinks, feels and acts, as well as often being fatal. The economic impact for medical costs from TBI alone is estimated by the federal Centers for Disease Control at about $76.5 billion annually, and 50,000 Americans die every year from it.
Pennsylvania is fortunate to be home to a variety of highly regarded institutions and organizations dedicated to research, treatment and advocacy of brain injury, and it is important to increase public awareness of the causes, impacts and treatments for it. I hope you will join in helping to do this by recognizing March as Brain Injury Month in Pennsylvania.
