As chair of the Senate State Government Committee, I regularly meet with people and organizations who advocate for openness and transparency. However, when I sometimes ask for background about how these initiatives are funded, I often get little or no information. As a strong supporter of openness, transparency, and accountability, I believe these principles should apply to both government and to those who spend money to influence government and government officials. With this in mind, I plan to introduce legislation that would add 501 (c) (4) entities, so-called “issue advocacy” organizations to the reporting requirements under Pennsylvania’s lobbying disclosure law. The following is the information I would like to see 501 (c) (4) organizations report:
