Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 12, 2017 02:47 PM
From: Senator Sharif Street
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Recognizing June 19, 2017 as “Juneteenth” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing June 19, 2016 as “Juneteenth” in Pennsylvania.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in which the last of the slaves located in Galveston, Texas were informed of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is one of the oldest African-American holiday observances in the United States. Juneteenth is recognized as a holiday observance in over 40 states as a way to acknowledge the past and celebrate the present.

I encourage members to join me in co-sponsoring the resolution.

Introduced as SR147
