Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 26, 2017 09:36 AM
From: Senator Thomas H. Killion
To: All Senate members
Subject: “Heatstroke Prevention Day” in Pennsylvania (July 31, 2017)

As we approach warmer weather, please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution designating July 31, 2017 as “Heatstroke Prevention Day” in Pennsylvania.

This reflects the same date as National Heatstroke Prevention Day.

Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle-related fatalities for children 14 and younger. Unfortunately, even great parents can forget a child in the back seat. Other risk factors include caregivers who aren’t used to driving kids or whose routine suddenly changes.

Heatstroke deaths have been recorded in 11 months of the year in nearly all 50 states, including Pennsylvania.

As of today’s date, 5 children in the U.S. have died from heatstroke inside vehicles.
Unfortunately, a one-year old child died on Friday, April 14, 2017 in Texas. At this same time last year, 2 children in the U.S. had died from heatstroke.

Since 1995, there have been a total of 12 child vehicular heatstroke deaths in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; one occurring last year on August 16, 2016.

We can all help reduce the number of injuries and death caused by heatstroke by raising public awareness of the importance of preventing these senseless tragedies from occurring.
