Subject: | Municipal Motor License Funds offset for State Police coverage |
I will shortly reintroduce SB 841 from the 2013-2014 legislative term, requiring an offset to be made against Motor License funding in municipalities with populations of at least 5,000 residents that rely on state police for primary police coverage. As we all know, Motor License funding that is intended to build and maintain state and local roadways instead is increasingly being used up to underwrite State Police operations. My bill would amend the Liquid Fuels Tax Municipal Allocation Law to reduce Motor License payments to affected municipalities in a direct dollar-for-dollar relation to the costs to provide state police coverage. These costs would be calculated on the per-capita costs to State Police to provide these services and the population of an affected municipality. Costs of interstate highway patrols in affected municipalities would be not be included in the calculations. Please join me in sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
