Subject: Internet Posting of Election Results
I am reintroducing Senate Bill 82, amending the Election Code, 1937 Act 320, to require the county board of elections to post election returns on election night for public access on an Internet site.

While current law requires each county’s board of elections to post returns at the board’s office as soon as the results are received from the judges of election, given modern technology, I believe that election results should be made more accessible to the public through the Internet. It is my understanding that some counties are already utilizing the Internet to post returns on election night as a courtesy to the voters and the candidates.

In an effort to improve public accessibility of election results, my legislation would require each county’s board of elections to make available, as soon as possible, the results of primaries and elections through an Internet site which will be updated as election returns are received in the office of the county board of elections after the polls close.

Interestingly, one of the methods that a county board of elections may utilize to submit election returns to the Department of State is through a World Wide Web site.

The use of modern technology will allow voters to more easily access election results received by the county board of elections and provide any updates as returns are processed.

During the 2015-16 legislative session, SB 82 was approved by the Senate State Government Committee.
