| Subject: | Designating Local Water Week in Pennsylvania |
| In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating the week of August 10-17, 2019 as “Local Water Week” in Pennsylvania to complement the submittal of the final Phase 3 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP 3). Pennsylvania is a water rich state with approximately 85,000 miles of streams and rivers connecting over 700,000 acres of lakes, bays, and wetlands. Our local waterways provide an important source of drinking water and recreational fishing and boating for Pennsylvanians. That is why it is important to raise awareness and to encourage Pennsylvania residents to actively learn about common-sense actions that they can take to protect and improve local water quality. During this week, it is my hope to see Pennsylvanians join in by hosting community events and educational programs designed to increase the awareness how important clean and healthy waters are to Pennsylvania, the region, and the United States. This designation will help to highlight different water quality issues, clean water challenges, and clean water success stories to kick-off the next steps in implementing Pennsylvania’s local planning efforts. As we promote these efforts along with the many Pennsylvania agencies and diverse partner organizations, we can better illustrate the connection between what happens in our backyard creeks and streams and how that impacts our neighbors up- and down-stream. |
