Subject: | Protection for Law Enforcement |
In the near future we will be introducing legislation that would restrict the release of identifying information of law enforcement officers involved in the discharging their firearm or use of force during the performance of their official duties. Unfortunately we have seen a recent surge in murders of law enforcement officers. The men and women who proudly wear the badge and their families are more in danger than ever. This legislation is aimed at easing the burden of an already stressful profession. The legislation would require that when an officer is involved in discharging a weapon or use of force, identifying information would be restricted pending an official investigation. At the conclusion of the investigation, if the officer is charged then the identity of the officer may be disclosed. If however the investigation does not result in charges and the release of the identifying information could reasonably be expected to cause harm to the officer or his family then the information may not be released. |
