Subject: | Providing Instruction to Students for Blood Donation |
In the near future, I plan to reintroduce my legislation directing the Department of Education, in conjunction with the Department of Health, to provide instruction to 11th- and 12th-grade students regarding donating blood. I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor. Statistics show that only about 5% of all Americans donate blood on a yearly basis, despite the fact that 40% are eligible to donate. This is staggering since an even greater portion of our population will need blood products at some point. According to the American Red Cross, approximately 43,000 pints of blood are used every day in North America, and every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. My bill would require blood donation education to be integrated within the health course of study currently required in public schools. This is a reintroduction of SB 748 from the previous legislative session. Co-sponsors included: COSTA, TARTAGLIONE, FARNESE and ALLOWAY. |
