Subject: Protecting Food Service Workers within the Department of Corrections
 
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that would prohibit the outsourcing of food service workers in our state correctional institutions.

I agree that in these difficult economic times, the state should look to all avenues in an effort to save valuable tax dollars. However, the public cost of a mistake such as outsourcing food service workers within our prison walls could be costly. The state of Michigan implemented a policy that privatized food service workers in their state prisons and found that many of these employees violated the state’s corrections department's policies. It is my hope we would not repeat their mistakes.
