Subject: | Iraq and Afghanistan War Bonus |
In the very near future I will be introducing a bill that would provide a bonus to the veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Commonwealth has offered a bonus for every war/conflict since World War I -- the most recent being the Persian Gulf Conflict Veterans’ Benefit Program (Act 29 of 2006). These most recent wars have been quite lengthy and I think the time is right to offer such a program. The bill would authorize the issuance of up to $40,000,000 in bonds to provide payments to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. The bond issue question would be submitted to the electorate at the 2014 General Election. Payments would be $100 for the first month of service and $100 per each month or fraction of a month thereafter. Total compensation could not exceed $2,400. In addition, compensation on behalf of a deceased veteran would be set at $7,500 and for a prisoner of war, $5,000. |
Introduced as SB1132
