Subject: | Corrections Officers Pay Disparity |
In the near future, I will introduce legislation that would amend the Public Employee Relations Act to ensure captains/lieutenants/first-level supervisors in the Department of Corrections receive a salary increase that matches pay raises earned by the highest-ranking corrections officer in a collective bargaining unit. The bill will address concerns that have been brought to my attention by several of my constituents who are employed at correctional facilities. Because managers are not permitted to be members of a collective bargaining unit, they do not receive the salary or benefit increases that lower ranking officers enjoy. Between 2009 and 2012, the wages of many supervisors remained stagnant while non-management/union employees received a 13.75 percent salary increase. This issue affects the morale of corrections officers and managers within our state prisons, which poses a threat to public safety. My legislation, which mirrors the 1985 Police Chief Pay Law for police officers, would eliminate this pay disparity between managers and their employees.
