Subject: | Motorcycles/Pedalcycles – Vehicle Detection Systems |
I plan to reintroduce legislation (Senate Bill 1075 from last session) which would provide for a course of action when a vehicle detection system fails to detect a pedalcycle (bicycle) or motorcycle due to the size of the vehicle. Traffic control signals that utilize a vehicle detection system are unable to detect pedalcycles and motorcycles due to their size. As a result, drivers of these cycles can be stuck at a standstill until a larger vehicle is detected and changes the traffic signal accordingly. My proposal would amend Title 75 (Vehicles) so the driver of a pedalcycle or motorcycle approaching an intersection controlled by a traffic control signal with a vehicle detection system (which is inoperative due to the size of the vehicle), would come to a full and complete stop at the intersection and, after exercising due care as provided by law, proceed with due caution when it is safe to do so. |
