Subject: | Abortion Opt-out |
Under the Federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, states are permitted to pass laws prohibiting health insurers who participate in the state health exchanges from paying for abortions. In the near future, I will re-introduce SB3 which prohibits taxpayer subsidized coverage provided through the Pennsylvania health exchange from covering abortions when it becomes operational. This bill implements the same policy prohibiting taxpayer funded elective abortions currently in place in the Pennsylvania Medical Assistance Program as well as the Abortion Control Act. SB3 was passed by the Senate by a bipartisan margin of 37-12. Last session’s co-sponsors include Senators: Scarnati, Pileggi, Argall, Yaw, Robbins, Browne, Erickson, Gordner, Kasunic, Vogel, Tomlinson, Folmer, Smucker, Orie, Alloway, Pippy, Corman, Brubaker, Eichelberger, Rafferty, Waugh, Mensch, Ward, Piccola, and Yudichak |
