Subject: | Recognizing October 15, 2024 as White Cane Safety Day |
The white cane is often viewed as a symbol of vision loss, but it is also a tool that is an important symbol of independence. The white cane facilitates independent travel for those with vision loss. It is included in Pennsylvania law which requires drivers of vehicles to yield the right-of-way pedestrians who are blind and using a visible white cane. Blindness and severe visual impairment affect approximately 300,000 of our fellow Pennsylvanians, and most people are unaware of the law that requires drivers to stop or yield to pedestrians using a white cane. More education is needed on the use of a white cane and how it should both provide independence for pedestrians who are blind and protect them from accidents. I will be introducing a resolution designating October 15, 2024 as White Cane Safety Day in Pennsylvania, to further the goal of greater awareness of the role of white canes in promoting safety and independence for people who are blind or have impaired vision in our Commonwealth. Please join me in this important recognition. |
