MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Preventing Abuse of Older Pennsylvanians

Protecting vulnerable Pennsylvanians is a critical issue for our General Assembly. Sadly, abuse of older adults rose by 63% in the Commonwealth in 2021. Older adult abuse can include physical and emotional abuse, financial abuse, neglect, and abandonment. These individuals deserve every possible protection to assure their safety and peace of mind.

Nurses are on the front lines of recognizing, reporting, and addressing older adult abuse. Our bill seeks to help reduce the abuse of older adults by providing education and resources to assist nurses in recognizing and reporting the abuse of older Pennsylvanians. It would require one hour of the currently mandated 30 hours of board-approved continuing education for nursing license renewal to focus on recognizing the signs of and reporting older adult abuse.

Older adults should not fear for their safety and should trust that healthcare professionals will be there to support them. We hope you will join us in supporting and protecting older Pennsylvanians by co-sponsoring this important legislation.

Introduced as HB2213
