Subject: | Veterans Suicide Awareness Month Resolution |
In the near future, we are joining together to introduce a resolution designating September 2024 as “Veterans Suicide Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Suicide is a national public health issue among veterans, non-veteran adults, and U.S. adults overall. Veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than those who never served in the military, and the risk factor for female veterans is even higher at 2.2 times. In Pennsylvania alone, we lose about 250 veterans per year by suicide. These men and women have selflessly served our country but have succumbed to the insurmountable grief often associated with high exposure to trauma, stress, burnout, addiction, isolation, unemployment, homelessness, loneliness, and difficulties reintegrating into civilian life. Our resolution aims to bring attention to this crucial matter and support the PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in their community-based outreach efforts by connecting veterans in crisis to the best possible resources to help them live a safe, healthy, quality life. Our service members, veterans, and their families are valued and cared about, and they’re not alone. If you are a veteran in crisis, or are concerned about one, free and confidential support is available 24/7. Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then press 1. Thank you for your consideration in signing onto this resolution to support our veterans and their families. |
