Subject: Autonomous Vehicle Day
According to a report prepared for the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, the autonomous mobile systems market is estimated to comprise a $802 billion global market by 2025-26. Pennsylvania is the proud home of “the birthplace of self-driving vehicles,” Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). It is vital that we build on the work of CMU’s Robotics Institute so our state can continue to actively participate in this emerging market.

This January, Pennsylvania’s first autonomous vehicle (AV) shuttle began in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Further, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has supported advances through the deployment of units that enable AV communications at select intersections, and the state legislature took a crucial step in establishing a regulatory framework for AV testing and deployment in Pennsylvania through passage of Act 130 of 2022.

To highlight our state’s active role in this emerging technology, I will be introducing a resolution designating May 31, 2024, as “Autonomous Vehicle Day” in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is well positioned to be at the forefront of AV technology development and workforce expansion. Please join me in honoring the part that this technology has played and will continue to play in our state’s economy by signing on to this resolution.
