Subject: | Exempting Temporary Election Worker Pay from Taxes |
The individuals who step up to ensure that our elections run smoothly are essential to the functioning of our democracy. Poll workers are the most visible part of this process, directly assisting many of our voters on Election Day, but there are many others who work behind-the-scenes whose role is also critical to the running of our elections. Under current law, payments to poll workers – those who perform duties at polling places – are exempt from Pennsylvania’s personal income tax. However, this exemption does not apply to individuals who are temporarily hired by counties to assist with the processing of election results at central tabulation centers. The additional income means an increased tax liability for some who assist with tabulation, but for retired seniors without other taxable income it could also necessitate additional paperwork involved in filing a state tax return. My legislation would treat those who volunteer to help with election tabulation the same way as those who volunteer in our polling places, by exempting their compensation from the state personal income tax. This change recognizes the importance of this public service in delivering the timely and accurate reporting of election results and ensuring confidence in our democratic process. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
