| Subject: | Community Service as an Alternative to Satisfying Fines and Fees |
| In Pennsylvania, if a person has their license suspended for failing to pay a fine, the suspension is indefinite, lasting until the underlying citation is paid. This suspension of driving privileges could deprive individuals of the ability to get to work, school, or other necessary commitments like a doctor’s appointment. To address these burdens, I will be introducing legislation that would allow a magisterial district judge to determine that, if someone would be financially unable to bear the costs of fines and fees associated with their traffic offense, they may be assigned community service as a payment alternative to license suspension. Individuals who currently have suspended licenses due to driving without a license, failure to appear, or failure to pay fines would also be provided this alternative, including an opportunity to receive a provisional license pending the satisfaction of their community service alternative program hours. Please join me in ensuring that our residents can maintain their autonomy while serving their communities, instead of paying off costly fines. |
