MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 9, 2023 03:02 PM
From: Representative La'Tasha D. Mayes
To: All House members
Subject: Protection from Abuse Hearings: Unpaid Leave

In the United States, more than one in four women and one in nine men has suffered severe physical violence by an intimate partner. In Pennsylvania, in the last year alone, 38,765 new protection from abuse (PFA) orders were filed. Despite our efforts to protect victims of abuse, 1,600 Pennsylvanians have died from domestic violence-related incidents in the past 10 years.

I firmly believe that one of the most important duties of government is to keep our residents safe from harm and abuse. For this reason, I will introduce legislation to support victims of domestic abuse in their attempts to receive a PFA order to protect them from further abuse. My legislation will require employers to provide unpaid leave for employees who attend a PFA hearing if the employee is a victim or is providing testimony on behalf of a victim. This will help to ensure that all victims of domestic abuse and intimate partner violence are able to make their case and receive the protection they deserve.

Please join me in supporting and furthering protection of victims of gender-based violence by cosponsoring this legislation.
