MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing June 19 as “Korean American Citizenship Day”

On June 19, 1890, Philip Jaisohn became the first Korean immigrant to acquire United States citizenship. A Korean political refugee who made his home in Media, Pennsylvania, Jaisohn dedicated himself to entrepreneurship and the fight for Korean independence. Throughout our history, members of the Korean American community, such as Philip Jaisohn, have made important contributions that have added to the vitality and fabric of our nation and our state.

This year marks 133 years since Philip Jaisohn paved the path for future Korean Americans. It is for this reason that we plan to introduce a resolution to recognize June 19, 2023, as “Korean American Citizenship Day” in Pennsylvania. In so doing, we commemorate this milestone and recognize the contributions Korean Americans have made in our state.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this important resolution and show your support for Korean Americans throughout Pennsylvania. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
