MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Designating October 2023 as Bullying Prevention Awareness Month

Nationwide, approximately 20% of students aged 12-18 have experienced bullying, and only 38% feel safe at school. Bullying is linked to many negative outcomes including impacts on mental health, substance use, and suicide. It can be verbal, physical, and via the Internet and can hurt a person’s self-esteem, social interactions, and performance.

People can be bullied for many reasons, including appearance, cultural accent, or some perceived “difference” in the victim. Bullying can last into adulthood, with a 2021 study reporting that 30% of American adults have experienced bullying in the workplace. Bullying in all life stages effects the victim, witnesses, and those who engage in the behavior. This is why we are introducing a resolution that designates October 2023 as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month” to  help Pennsylvanians work together to recognize and stop bullying.

Bullying Prevention Awareness Month is a month-long effort that encourages everyone to take an active role in the bullying prevention movement. Please join us in designating October 2023 as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania to help bring bullying to an end.
