MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 28, 2023 11:41 AM
From: Representative Tarah Probst
To: All House members
Subject: Prohibition of the Sale of Class C Consumer Fireworks

The usage of fireworks has become a real nuisance in some areas, causing stress to pets and livestock, depriving people of sleep, and negatively impacting veterans and others with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Pennsylvania law currently permits the sale of Class C or “consumer-grade” fireworks such as firecrackers, roman candles, and bottle rockets.  The use of these fireworks may cause stress, anxiety, and other health issues for those who cannot tolerate the sound.

Additionally, there have been daily complaints in the summertime of people not following the law and shooting off fireworks in small towns, boroughs, and residential areas, potentially causing collateral damage throughout our communities.

Every citizen and animal of our state deserves to live in their home and neighborhoods peacefully.  In an effort to reduce the negative impacts of fireworks, I plan to introduce legislation that will prohibit the sale of Class C fireworks in Pennsylvania.  Furthermore, my legislation will increase the fines for those who violate the law.

Please consider co-sponsoring this important legislation and join me in helping others live in our state free from the stress and anxiety caused by fireworks.

Introduced as HB1279
