Subject: | Designating the Month of April 2023 as “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” |
Every day in the United States, hundreds of people from all walks of life are subjected to sexual violence. Sexual violence, which includes rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, can have severe long-term detrimental effects on a survivor, with many experiencing psychological effects such as depression, flashbacks, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, approximately 20% of women in the U.S. have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lives, and almost a quarter of men have experienced some form of sexual violence. Children, women of color, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community experience disproportionately higher rates of sexual violence. In order to raise awareness and show support for survivors of sexual assault, I will be introducing a resolution designating April 2023 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. This year is the 22nd anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which was established to provide education on sexual violence prevention and provide support for survivors of sexual violence. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center has designated the theme of Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2023 to be “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity” to recognize the inherent connections between systems of oppression and sexual violence. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to promote awareness of this insidious reality that affects so many of our friends, families, and loved ones and in supporting our continued efforts to put an end to sexual violence. |
