Subject: | Social Media Hate Speech Accountability |
Advances in open communication can come at a cost. While social media has made it easier for people to keep in touch, it can also serve as an open forum for hate speech and abuse. Those in control of these platforms must be held accountable in addressing this troublesome issue that touches young people as well as adults. My legislation would require social media network companies to establish and maintain effective and transparent complaint procedures for reporting hate speech content. These procedures must ensure users have access to a permanent, easily recognizable, directly accessible procedure for submitting complaints. Persons who are emboldened by the anonymity of social media platforms to spew hate cannot be tolerated. Providing users with an easy way to report these issues will help to decrease such occurrences. Maintaining social media platforms as a safe place is important in protecting users from abuse. Please join me in making it clear that hate speech is unwelcome on social media in Pennsylvania. |
