MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 3, 2023 01:03 PM
From: Representative Malcolm Kenyatta and Rep. Donna Bullock, Rep. Danilo Burgos
To: All House members
Subject: Increasing State Oversight of Temple University

Temple University is an anchor institution, and its success is critical for North Philadelphia and the entire city. The university has been facing difficulties on a variety of fronts including safety, enrollment, and upheaval in university leadership, these facts make it is more important than ever that we step up and provide greater oversight. As a state-related university, Temple enjoys the benefits of state funding every year, without nearly as much oversight as the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) universities.

It is important that, the commonwealth, ensures that the money we allocate toward Temple is being used prudently and that students and the community are fully benefitting from the state’s support of Temple.

That is why we are introducing legislation to increase the number of state-appointed board members to the Temple University Board of Trustees by giving one more appointment to the Governor, the President pro tempore of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

With more state-appointed board members on the Board of Trustees, we can ensure that the state has greater oversight over the important decisions ahead of the board and can guarantee that state money is being used effectively.

Temple University plays an important role in Pennsylvania’s – and Philadelphia’s – future, and right now it needs our help. Please join us in co-sponsoring this legislation.
